Caring for custom furniture in a tropical climate

Hands dusting an upholstered leather sofa

The Malaysian climate is not gentle on furniture. Humidity averages 80%. Equatorial sun is unforgiving. Air-conditioning cycles dry interiors out, then humid afternoons re-saturate them. Most household pieces don't get the simple ongoing care that would let them last decades instead of years.

Here are the practices we recommend to clients who want to keep their commissioned pieces looking right for the long haul.

Weekly: dust and rotate

Once a week, give upholstered pieces a light vacuum with a soft brush attachment, especially in seams and crevices. Dust is more abrasive than people realise — it works into fibres under pressure and accelerates wear.

While you are there, rotate seat cushions and back cushions if they are removable. Even pressure across the cushion life means even wear.

Monthly: condition leather

If you have leather upholstery, apply a high-quality leather conditioner once a month during the dry season and once every two weeks during heavy rains. We supply a small bottle with every leather commission. When that runs out, ask us — we'll point you to the brand we use in the workshop.

Quarterly: deep clean upholstery

Every three months, give upholstered pieces a deeper clean. Vacuum thoroughly, then spot-clean any marks with a clean white cloth and a fabric-appropriate cleaner (we will have noted this on your handover documents). Avoid soaking — work small areas at a time.

Once a year, consider professional upholstery cleaning. A good service knows how to clean without damaging the foam or finish. Ask us for our preferred supplier list.

Annually: timber care

Oiled timber benefits from a light re-oiling once a year. The product matters less than the practice — apply sparingly with a soft cloth, work along the grain, and buff off excess after twenty minutes. Avoid silicone-based polishes, which build up over time and become difficult to remove.

Things to watch for in our climate

  • Humidity expansion: drawers that suddenly stick in the rainy season are almost always just timber swelling. Wait it out — they'll loosen in drier weeks. Do not force them or sand them down.
  • Mould on cushions: if you find spots, vacuum thoroughly, dry the cushion in indirect sunlight, then spot-treat with a fabric-safe antimicrobial. If it is widespread, ring us — we can re-stuff cushions affordably.
  • Sunlight fading: rotate cushions toward and away from windows to even out fade. Use sheers or roman blinds in rooms that get full afternoon sun.
  • Pet damage: for cat owners, the single most effective intervention is a sturdy scratching post placed near (not in front of) the sofa. For dogs, washable cushion covers on top of upholstered seats can extend life dramatically.

When something does go wrong

Every commission we deliver comes with our number. If a seam opens, a leg loosens, a cushion goes soft, or a spill turns into a stain — ring us before doing anything. Most issues are easier to fix early. Many are covered under warranty.

If you are an existing client and need to discuss a piece, drop us a note — we can usually book a workshop visit within the week.
